How were these weapons used?
Hi again! Now, we'll talk about how the Greeks used their weapons, and how they killed and wounded people in the name of their country. If you previously read about the Greek weapons used, you will now find out the purpose of those such as the Dory, Xipho, Hoplon, Kopi, Sauroter, ect. Let's start with the most primary weapon. The Dory. For this weapon, it was pretty straight forward. A long spear designed to impale adversarys. Again, the Dory was topped with a Sauroter and had a spiked end called a aichme. The Sautor was usually used to plant the Dory in the ground. It was also used to balance the weight of the heavy spear. When an enemy had fallen, yet was still alive, the Sautor was used to finish them. (Sorry, a little intense here.) The secondary weapon used to a Dory was the Xipho. When it was neccasary for a chase to occur, most weapons would be dropped, however, the Xipho would be taken along because it was the much lighter. While in battle, men arranged themselves in rows. In the front row, the Dory was too long to cause any damage, while the Xipho was just the perfect length . It could be thrust into the throat, groin, or armpit. Next is the Hoplon (sheild). Since these shields could weigh up to 33 pounds, soldiers used them to bash into the heads of opponents. In addition to this, the men would line up and form walls against any weapons coming towards them. Lastly, the one you have all been waiting for... The Kopi. The tool thought of as the "bad guy weapon." They were small curved swords that hacked gruesomely into another. This process was paticularly "messy", therefor its infamous reputation.
